The practicum is where the Academy gives back to the world. You will either complete a professional project for a real client or mentor a newer creator through their first steps. Either path requires you to apply your skills in a professional context with real stakes, real deadlines, and real people depending on you.
This is not a simulation. It is real work that produces real results for real people. It is also the final requirement for your E.x.O. Academy diploma.
You have two options for the practicum. Both are equally valid. Choose based on your skills, interests, and what will serve your career best.
Path A: Client Project
Complete a professional project for a real client. This could be:
- Ghostwriting a content package (scripts, blog posts, marketing copy) for another creator
- Producing a video or audio project for a client (editing, sound design, full production)
- Building or redesigning a website or digital storefront for a creator or small business
- Running a marketing campaign for a client (content strategy, execution, and reporting)
- Any professional content service that uses skills from the Academy curriculum
Requirements: The client must be real (not a friend doing you a favor). There must be a written agreement defining scope, timeline, and payment (paid or explicitly pro-bono with a clear exchange of value). The project must be completed to the client's satisfaction.
Path B: Mentorship
Guide a newer creator through their first 4-6 weeks of building their business. This could be:
- Mentoring a Semester 1-3 Academy student through their coursework
- Coaching a new creator in your niche who has not yet earned their first dollar
- Leading a small group (3-5 people) through a structured learning program you designed
Requirements: At least 4 sessions over 4-6 weeks. Documented curriculum or session plans. Measurable outcomes for the mentee (their first published content, first sale, first 100 followers, etc.). A reflection from both you and the mentee on the experience.
Why Both Paths Matter
- Client work proves you can deliver professional results under real constraints. It builds your portfolio and professional network.
- Mentorship proves you can transfer your knowledge effectively. It builds the next generation of creators and strengthens the Academy community. Graduates who mentor create a self-sustaining ecosystem.
The Academy grows itself. Every graduate who mentors a new student is expanding the community, raising the quality of the industry, and building their own reputation as a leader.
๐จ Milestone 1: Practicum Proposal
- Choose Path A (Client Project) or Path B (Mentorship)
- Write a practicum proposal: who is the client or mentee, what is the scope, what is the timeline, and what are the expected outcomes?
- If Path A: secure the client and draft a written agreement
- If Path B: find your mentee(s) and prepare a 4-6 week session plan
Deliverable: Practicum proposal + client agreement (Path A) or session plan (Path B).
This is the work. 4-6 weeks of professional execution with real accountability.
Path A: Client Project Execution
- Kick-off meeting. Align on expectations, timeline, communication cadence, and deliverable format. Document everything in writing.
- Regular check-ins. Weekly updates to the client on progress. Do not disappear for 3 weeks and reappear with a finished product. Communication is half the job.
- Drafts and revisions. Submit work for feedback before finalizing. Incorporate feedback professionally. If you disagree with a revision request, explain why respectfully, but ultimately defer to the client on their own content.
- Final delivery. Deliver the completed work in the agreed format by the agreed deadline. Include any handoff documentation needed (file organization, usage instructions, etc.).
- Post-project debrief. Ask the client: What went well? What could be improved? Would you work with me again? Request a written testimonial.
Path B: Mentorship Execution
- Session 1: Assessment. Where is the mentee now? What are their goals? What skills do they need? Create a personalized plan based on their starting point.
- Sessions 2-4: Skill building. Teach one new concept per session. Give specific, actionable homework. Review their work at the start of each session with constructive feedback.
- Sessions 5-6: Launch and refine. Help them publish, post, or sell their first content. Review results together. Adjust strategy based on data.
- Final session: Independence planning. What should they focus on next? What resources will help? How can they continue growing without you? The goal is to make yourself unnecessary.
Documenting the Process
Throughout the practicum, maintain a log:
- Date and duration of each session or work period
- What was accomplished
- What challenges arose and how you handled them
- What you learned about working with clients/mentees
๐จ Milestone 2: Practicum Execution
- Complete 4-6 weeks of practicum work following your proposal
- Maintain a detailed practicum log (entries after each session/work period)
- For Path A: deliver the completed project and collect client feedback
- For Path B: complete all mentorship sessions and document mentee progress
Deliverable: Practicum log + completed project or mentorship documentation.
The final step is reflecting on the practicum experience and packaging it for your capstone submission.
The Practicum Report
Write a 2-3 page report covering:
- Overview. What path did you choose? Who was the client or mentee? What was the project scope?
- Process. How did you approach the work? What was your workflow? What tools and techniques from the Academy did you apply?
- Results. What did you deliver? What outcomes were achieved? For Path A: was the client satisfied? For Path B: what did the mentee accomplish?
- Challenges. What was harder than expected? How did you adapt? What would you do differently?
- Growth. What did you learn about yourself as a professional? How did this experience change your approach to your work?
- Testimonial. Include a written testimonial from the client or mentee about the experience.
Evidence of Impact
- Path A: The completed deliverable (or screenshots/samples if confidential), the client agreement, the client's written feedback, and any metrics showing the impact of your work.
- Path B: Session notes for all sessions, the mentee's published content or results, the mentee's written reflection on the experience, and before/after evidence of their growth.
๐ก Practicum Complete
You have now done the thing. Not in a classroom, not in a simulation, but in the real world with real people counting on you. This experience is yours forever. It goes in your portfolio, your resume, and your professional story. More importantly, you made a tangible difference for someone else. A client got professional work. A new creator got a better start. That is what the Academy is for.
๐จ Final Deliverable: Practicum Submission
Submit your complete practicum package as part of your capstone (PROJ-450):
- Practicum proposal (from Milestone 1)
- Client agreement or mentorship session plan
- Practicum log (all sessions documented)
- Practicum report (2-3 pages)
- Evidence of impact (deliverables, metrics, or mentee results)
- Client/mentee testimonial
Congratulations. You have completed the E.x.O. Academy curriculum. Every course, every exercise, every project has led to this. You are a professional content creator with the skills, the portfolio, and the business to prove it. Now go make something remarkable.
